Gabonese citizens are reacting with mixed emotions following Brice Oligui Nguema’s sweeping victory in the April 2025 presidential election, where he garnered over 90 percent of the vote. The former military leader, who took power in a coup in 2023, has promised economic reforms and a return to democratic governance. His win, while expected by many, has sparked both hope and concern among the population.
For some, Nguema’s election signals a new chapter for Gabon. Supporters see him as a reformist committed to ending decades of misrule under the Bongo dynasty. Young voters, like 28-year-old nurse Lionel Ekambou, say they are hopeful that the president’s social and economic agenda will improve living conditions, especially for those living in poverty. Nguema has pledged to diversify the oil-reliant economy by investing in agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing, while also addressing infrastructure gaps and public service delivery.
However, skepticism persists. Critics argue that Nguema’s inner circle still includes key figures from the previous regime, raising doubts about whether meaningful change is truly underway. Libaski Moussavou, a 34-year-old voter, voiced concern that Nguema is simply continuing the legacy of the Bongo family in a different form. Others have questioned the fairness of the electoral process, pointing to alleged irregularities such as the misuse of voter cards and the rushed timeline for the polls.
Former Prime Minister Alain Claude Bilie By Nze, one of Nguema’s challengers, rejected the results, accusing the transitional government of orchestrating a fraudulent process. He warned against allowing the military to entrench itself in civilian governance and called for greater transparency and democratic checks.
International observers, including teams from the African Union and the European Union, noted that most polling stations operated under acceptable conditions, with high levels of transparency. Still, the international community is watching closely to see if Nguema will live up to his promises of reform, particularly his commitment to hold future elections and strengthen civil liberties.
As Gabon moves forward under Nguema’s leadership, many citizens remain cautiously optimistic. The new administration has the burden of proving that it can deliver on promises made, unify the country, and chart a new democratic course after years of political uncertainty.
