Liverpool are on the verge of lifting the Premier League trophy for the second time in five years, needing just a solitary point against struggling Tottenham Hotspur this Sunday to be crowned champions. The Reds, under the guidance of Arne Slot, have enjoyed a phenomenal campaign and now stand just one result away from equalling Manchester United’s record of 20 English league titles.

A draw or a win at a packed Anfield will confirm Liverpool as 2024/25 Premier League champions. The atmosphere is expected to be electric, as fans prepare for what could be a historic day for the club.

Dominance Displayed, One Step Remains

Liverpool’s dominance has been clear throughout the season. After a critical 1-0 win against Leicester last week, the Reds moved 13 points ahead of second-placed Arsenal, who dropped points midweek in a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace. That result handed Liverpool the opportunity to seal the title with four matches to spare.

Captain Virgil van Dijk praised the team’s season but was quick to remind everyone that the job isn’t done yet.

“It’s been an outstanding season, but there’s still work to do,” said Van Dijk. “We’ve played Tottenham three times already this season and every game has been intense. We must stay focused.”

Liverpool have a stellar record against Tottenham. They thrashed Spurs 6-3 earlier in the season and beat them 4-1 on aggregate in the League Cup semi-finals. Tottenham, currently 16th, have not won at Anfield since 2011 and are in poor form, making Liverpool heavy favorites.

Champions League Race Heats Up

While Liverpool and Arsenal look certain to play in next season’s UEFA Champions League, the race for the remaining European places is wide open. This season, the Premier League will send its top five teams to Europe’s top-tier competition due to England’s strong performances in continental football.

Manchester City, Newcastle, Chelsea, Aston Villa, and Nottingham Forest are all in the mix. Just four points separate third-placed City from seventh-placed Villa.

City grabbed a crucial win against Villa in midweek, while Nottingham Forest stunned Tottenham with a 2-0 victory on Monday. Newcastle could leap above City if they beat lowly Ipswich, who are in serious danger of relegation.

Chelsea, still outside the top five, face Everton at home on Saturday. The Blues have a tough run-in, with matches against Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester United, and Forest still to come. A win this weekend is a must if they hope to keep their Champions League dreams alive.

Relegation Battle Intensifies

At the other end of the table, the relegation battle continues to unfold. Southampton, Leicester, and Ipswich are all in deep trouble.

Southampton’s 1-1 draw at West Ham last weekend saw them equal Derby County’s record-low points tally of 11 from the 2007/08 season. With five games left, they’ll hope to at least finish with some pride.

Leicester have already been relegated, and Ipswich look likely to follow. A draw for West Ham at Brighton on Saturday would confirm Ipswich’s return to the Championship. This would mark the second consecutive season in which all three promoted clubs go straight back down—a rare occurrence last seen in the 1997/98 season.

The gap between the Premier League and the Championship appears to be widening, making it increasingly difficult for promoted clubs to survive in the top flight.
