Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi, 27, has been placed in an induced coma after undergoing emergency abdominal surgery. The Nigerian international sustained a ruptured intestine during a Premier League match against Leicester City on Sunday, May 11, 2025.

The injury occurred in the 88th minute when Awoniyi collided with the goalpost while attempting to connect with a cross from Anthony Elanga. Despite receiving on-field treatment, he continued to play, visibly in discomfort. Subsequent medical evaluations revealed the severity of his condition, leading to urgent surgery on Monday night.

To aid his recovery, Awoniyi was placed in an induced coma, a medical procedure intended to restrict movement and regulate heart rate. Forest’s medical team has scheduled a second phase of surgery for Wednesday. The club has stated that he is “recovering well” and emphasized the importance of player health and well-being.

The incident has sparked discussions about in-game injury protocols. Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis expressed frustration over the handling of Awoniyi’s injury, confronting manager Nuno Espírito Santo post-match. The club clarified that Marinakis’s actions stemmed from concern for the player’s welfare.

Awoniyi joined Nottingham Forest in June 2022 from Union Berlin and has since made 83 appearances, scoring 19 goals.

The football community extends its support to Awoniyi during his recovery.
