Former Lugari Member of Parliament Cyrus Jirongo has died in a tragic road accident along the Naivasha–Eldoret highway, sending shockwaves through Kenya’s political and social circles. The seasoned politician, known for his influential role in the country’s political landscape over several decades, was among those killed when a vehicle collided with a trailer in the early hours of Tuesday morning.
The accident occurred near Naivasha, a major transit corridor linking the Rift Valley with the rest of the country. According to preliminary reports from eyewitnesses and motorists who were in the area at the time, the vehicle in which Jirongo was travelling collided with a heavy-duty trailer, resulting in a violent impact that caused multiple fatalities and left other passengers seriously injured. Emergency services and security personnel quickly responded to the scene, where the wreckage was described as “severe,” with victims trapped inside mangled vehicles.
Jirongo—a veteran politician who rose to prominence in the 1990s as a youthful advocate for political reform—had a long and varied career in public life. He served as MP for Lugari Constituency and later remained an active voice in national debates, often drawing attention for his outspoken positions on governance and economic issues. His death has triggered an outpouring of grief from colleagues, former rivals, supporters, and ordinary Kenyans who remember him for his contributions to public discourse.
Authorities at the scene confirmed that Jirongo died on the spot, along with at least two other occupants of the vehicle. Several others were rushed to nearby health facilities with critical injuries. Medical teams said they were battling to save lives, while police began cordoning off the crash site to preserve evidence and manage the flow of traffic. A full forensic examination of the scene was underway as investigators sought to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the collision.
Early indications suggest that the accident may have been caused by loss of control on a busy stretch of the highway, where speeding and overtaking are frequently cited by authorities as leading contributory factors to fatal crashes. Road safety experts have long called for enhanced enforcement of traffic laws, improved road signage, and heightened public awareness campaigns to curb a growing toll of road fatalities across the country.
President William Ruto expressed his condolences, describing Jirongo as “a committed public servant whose efforts helped shape Kenya’s political discourse.” In a statement released hours after the news broke, the Head of State said the nation had lost “a bold and energetic leader” and urged Kenyans to unite in mourning and prayer for the bereaved family.
Opposition figures and members of the political class also weighed in, lauding Jirongo for his unwavering spirit and passion for national issues. At the same time, some recalled spirited disagreements over policy and direction, but most were united in emphasizing his zeal for public engagement and the vibrancy he brought to Kenya’s multi-party system. Social media platforms were flooded with tributes from Kenyans who shared personal memories of interactions with Jirongo at rallies and public events over the years.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said it would release a preliminary crash report once key evidence, including statements from survivors and forensic analysis of the truck and vehicle involved, had been collected. Road safety campaigners said they hoped the tragedy would serve as a wake-up call to motorists and authorities alike, stressing that no amount of political prominence should shield anyone from the dangers posed by poor road safety practices.
Jirongo’s family confirmed that arrangements were being made to repatriate his remains to their rural home for burial in accordance with family and cultural traditions. Details of memorial services and a final farewell are expected in the coming days, when the nation will have a chance to reflect collectively on the life and legacy of a figure who remained a fixture in Kenya’s political arena for decades.
