Two Suspects Lynched in Naivasha as Mob Justice Surges Amid Security Fears

NAIVASHA, Kenya — Tension is escalating in Naivasha following the lynching of two suspected criminals in separate incidents, the latest in a worrying surge of mob justice linked to rising insecurity in the area.

The two men, accused by residents of robbery and terrorising the community, were killed on Tuesday in Karai and Kayole neighbour hoods, only hours apart. According to eyewitnesses, angry mobs cornered the suspects before beating them and setting them ablaze.

The incidents come just days after another suspected criminal was lynched in the town, raising alarm over a growing pattern of vigilante violence driven by public frustration over crime and perceived police inaction.

Residents say cases of break-ins, theft and violent attacks have increased in recent weeks, with repeated appeals to authorities yielding little relief.

“We have reported these criminals many times. Nothing changes,” said a local business owner in Karai. “People feel abandoned. When the police fail, the community reacts.”

Police have condemned the killings, terming them criminal acts that undermine the rule of law. Naivasha Sub-County Police Commander confirmed the incidents and said investigations had been launched to identify those involved in the lynchings.

The commander announced intensified patrols and intelligence-led operations aimed at curbing crime, while urging residents to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.

“We understand the frustration, but mob justice is not a solution,” the police said in a statement. “Suspects should be arrested and presented before a court of law.”

The latest killings highlight a deepening trust deficit between communities and security agencies, with fear and anger increasingly boiling over into deadly violence.

Human rights groups have repeatedly warned that mob justice not only leads to loss of innocent lives but also fuels lawlessness and cycles of revenge.

As Naivasha grapples with insecurity, residents and leaders alike are calling for urgent, visible action to restore confidence in law enforcement and prevent further loss of life.
