Chief Protus Wechuli, affectionately known as the ‘Misheveve Chief,’ has officially retired from public service after an 18-year tenure as the chief of Saboti Location in Trans Nzoia County. His retirement was celebrated on April 5, 2025, with a ceremony attended by community members and dignitaries, including DAP-K party leader Eugene Wamalwa.

Wechuli gained national recognition for his humorous and approachable leadership style, particularly after a viral video in which he recounted a domestic dispute involving a man upset about being served pumpkin leaves (‘misheveve’) instead of his preferred African kales. This anecdote earned him the endearing nickname.

During the retirement ceremony, Wechuli entertained attendees with his characteristic humor, joking about returning his official items but keeping his trousers. He also playfully described ‘misheveve’ as a fast-growing, economical vegetable.

In recognition of his dedicated service, Saboti Member of Parliament Caleb Amisi presented Wechuli with a new motorcycle, and Deputy Inspector General Gilbert Masengeli gifted him a bull. Amisi praised the chief’s unique blend of hard work and humor, encouraging other chiefs to emulate his approach.

Eugene Wamalwa also lauded Wechuli’s service, noting that he was celebrated by Kenyans from all walks of life for his distinguished service.

Wechuli’s retirement marks the end of a notable chapter in local leadership, leaving behind a legacy of community engagement and humor that resonated widely.
