Former Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) Chairman Irungu Nyakera has addressed his recent removal from the position, expressing his feelings through a sarcastic social media post. He shared the official Gazette notice announcing his dismissal, quipping, “I feel special to be fired through a special issue. They could not wait for Friday!”

Nyakera’s departure follows his absence during President William Ruto’s tour of the Mt. Kenya region, which he attributed to academic commitments at Oxford University. He emphasized that his absence was not a sign of disrespect but a matter of priority.

In response to online reactions regarding his removal, Nyakera downplayed the significance of the KICC chairmanship, revealing that the role offered a modest honorarium. He stated that, under State Corporations Advisory Committee guidelines, a board chair receives a net honorarium of Ksh54,000 per month, plus Ksh7,000 for airtime, with a sitting allowance of Ksh14,000 per meeting, capped at 10 meetings annually. He added, “No pension, no perks, no executive powers.”

Nyakera’s removal and his subsequent comments have sparked discussions about his relationship with the current administration and the circumstances surrounding his departure. His candid reaction provides insight into his perspective on the events and the nature of the position he held.
