Panic and grief gripped Mwihoko Estate in Kiambu County on Thursday afternoon after a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) helicopter crashed into a residential area, killing all occupants on board and leaving a trail of destruction.

The military aircraft reportedly exploded mid-air at around 2:00 PM before plummeting into the Dagama area of Mwihoko, near Ruiru. Witnesses described the harrowing scene as the helicopter burst into flames before crashing into houses and a car park, sending debris and fire across the neighborhood.

Eyewitness Accounts

“I heard a loud bang, like an explosion in the sky. Then I saw the chopper spinning and falling down quickly. Within seconds, it crashed and burst into flames,” said Esther Wambui, a local resident whose home was just a few meters from the crash site.

Other residents said they saw what appeared to be bodies ejected from the helicopter as it descended in flames. Some remains were reported to have landed on rooftops and nearby buildings.

Response from Authorities

Security and emergency response teams, including KDF personnel, the National Police Service, and the Kenya Red Cross, swiftly arrived at the scene to cordon off the area, control crowds, and begin rescue operations. However, the intense fire and devastation made it difficult to identify victims or determine if any civilians on the ground were harmed.

As of 4:00 PM, KDF had not released an official statement on the number of individuals on board or the cause of the crash.

Government’s Initial Reaction

Speaking to reporters shortly after news of the crash broke, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki called for calm and patience as investigations commence.

“This is a tragic incident for our nation. We are in contact
