A security guard was killed early Thursday morning during a break-in at a liquor store in Kahawa West, Nairobi, an incident that has sparked concern among residents already grappling with rising insecurity.
The robbery occurred at around 4:00 a.m., when unknown assailants stormed the shop, overpowered the guard, and gained entry into the premises. Police reports indicate that the criminals vandalised the CCTV system before looting alcoholic drinks and other items valued at approximately KSh 2.5 million.
Store owner Nicholas Mwongera said he was alerted at about 7:00 a.m. by neighbours who had noticed unusual activity at the premises. Upon arrival, he found the shop ransacked, with the main door broken and surveillance cables cut. He immediately reported the incident to the Kahawa West Police Station. Mwongera described the loss as devastating and urged authorities to act swiftly to protect businesses in the area.
The killing and robbery have reignited fears among residents, many of whom say insecurity has been worsening over the past few weeks. Locals attribute the surge in criminal acts to a prolonged power outage that has left large sections of the neighbourhood in darkness. They claim that Kenya Power removed a transformer for repair nearly three weeks ago and has not replaced it, creating an ideal environment for criminals to operate under the cover of darkness.
Residents say the blackout has emboldened thugs and compromised night-time patrols. Many are calling for urgent intervention, including restoration of power, increased police presence and street lighting to deter criminal activity. Business owners are also being encouraged to enhance their security measures, such as installing backup lighting and more robust security systems.
Kasarani police have confirmed that investigations into the killing and robbery are underway. Detectives are working to establish how many suspects were involved and whether the incident is connected to other crimes reported in the area. Police are urging anyone with information to come forward as they work to bring the perpetrators to justice.
