According to NTV, CCTV footage from Eagle Petrol Station shows Jirongo’s vehicle arriving at 2:18:44 AM from Nairobi, making a U-turn within 34 seconds, and then heading back toward Nairobi at 2:19:19 AM. Six seconds later, at 2:19:25 AM, his Mercedes collided head-on with the Climax bus, which was descending toward Naivasha. The impact dragged Jirongo’s car for several meters before it spun off the road, bringing the bus to a halt.

The footage also shows that the road remained clear prior to the crash, and no bystanders checked on the scene despite its reputation as an accident black spot. Of particular note is a white Probox vehicle that entered the petrol station 29 seconds after Jirongo, suggesting the politician may have been attempting to evade a “tiger tail” — a term used to describe a vehicle or team discreetly following a target. Security expert George Mtsamali said, “Jirongo likely realized he was being tailed and took evasive action, trying to shake off the Probox before the crash occurred.”

Reports indicate that Jirongo left Karen Oasis, near the Deputy President’s official residence, before allegedly heading to Park Place along Magadi Road. Multiple sources have disputed this stop, stating that he did not attend a planned session with former Senator George Khaniri. Instead, Jirongo was reportedly at Karen Oasis meeting National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetangula and restaurant owner Rebman Malala.

NTSA records show that Jirongo’s vehicle, registration number KCZ-350C, is registered under Smart Cars Limited, not in his personal name.

The DCI had previously scheduled further questioning of Climax bus driver Tairus Kamau Githinji for Monday, December 22, but that date has since passed. Investigators continue to review new evidence to determine the precise sequence of events and whether Jirongo’s fatal crash was linked to an attempted evasive maneuver to escape a “tiger tail.”
