Declan Rice shook off a knee injury scare to inspire Arsenal to a thrilling 3-2 come-from-behind victory over Bournemouth, extending the Gunners’ lead at the top of the Premier League table to six points.
Rice, who had been a major doubt after missing Tuesday’s emphatic 4-1 win over Aston Villa due to knee swelling, returned to the starting line-up and delivered a decisive performance, scoring twice to push Arsenal closer to a long-awaited league title.
Arsenal’s afternoon began on a shaky note when a rare mistake from Gabriel Magalhaes handed Bournemouth an early advantage. The Brazilian defender misjudged a cross-field pass intended for Jurrien Timber, allowing Evanilson to race through and calmly slot past goalkeeper David Raya for his first home goal of the season inside 10 minutes.
However, Gabriel quickly made amends. Just six minutes later, the towering centre-back rose highest to convert Noni Madueke’s deflected cross, restoring parity and underlining his growing reputation as a goal threat. The strike marked his 20th Premier League goal since joining Arsenal in 2020, more than any other defender in that period.
Rice then took control after the break. Deployed in a more advanced role this season, the England international showcased his composure in front of goal. On 56 minutes, he was perfectly picked out by Martin Ødegaard before calmly slotting home from the edge of the area to put Arsenal ahead.
Substitute Bukayo Saka later played a key role in Arsenal’s third, cutting the ball back for Rice to sweep home his second of the afternoon, doubling his league goal tally for the campaign.
Bournemouth refused to go quietly. Eli Kroupi produced a stunning long-range strike to pull one back and set up a tense finale, but Mikel Arteta’s side remained composed to see out the result.
The win moves Arsenal seven points clear of Manchester City, who have a game in hand and host a managerless Chelsea on Sunday.
Despite extending their winless run to 11 matches dating back to October 26, Bournemouth showed their attacking quality. Only five teams have scored more Premier League goals this season than Andoni Iraola’s side.
For Arsenal, the victory represents another significant step toward ending their 22-year wait for a Premier League title, with Rice once again proving decisive at the business end of the season.
