Police have launched a manhunt for suspected militants following a deadly early-morning attack in Hulugho, Garissa County, that left a local chief and a primary school teacher dead.
In a statement issued from Vigilance House on Monday, January 26, 2026, the National Police Service (NPS) confirmed that a multi-agency security operation is underway under the authority of Inspector General Douglas Kanja.
NPS Spokesperson Michael Muchiri Nyaga said the pursuit involves specialised security units and intelligence teams deployed to track down those responsible for the killings.
“A multi-agency security team is actively pursuing the perpetrators of this cowardly act,” Nyaga said. “The area has been secured, and our specialised units are combing the region to ensure the suspects face the full weight of the law.”
According to police reports, the attackers targeted the victims at their homes during the night. The slain administrator was identified as a local chief, while the second victim was a teacher serving in the area.
Heightened Security Measures
Following the attack, the NPS announced a series of heightened security measures aimed at stabilising the region and preventing further violence. Patrols along the Kenya–Somalia border have been intensified to block possible escape routes and curb cross-border infiltration by extremist groups.
Specialised units from the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit (ATPU) and the Border Patrol Unit (BPU) have been deployed to lead intelligence gathering and ground operations in and around Hulugho.
The Inspector General’s office warned that the government will not tolerate attempts to destabilise the region, reaffirming the police service’s commitment to protecting lives and property.
Call for Public Cooperation
Police have also appealed to residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by sharing any information that could aid the ongoing investigations.
“The safety of our citizens remains our utmost priority,” the NPS said, urging members of the public to report suspicious activities through established security channels.
Security operations in the area are ongoing as authorities pursue the suspects believed to be behind the attack.
