A driver and a tout attached to a Super Metro bus have been charged in court over the death of a 25-year-old man in Kitengela.

The two are accused of being involved in the death of Joseph Mureithi, who allegedly fell from a moving vehicle along the Kitengela–Namanga Highway on Tuesday, February 24, 2026.

According to reports presented to court, Mureithi was allegedly pushed out of the bus by the crew before the vehicle sped off. Moments later, the same bus is said to have run over him.

Following their arraignment, the two suspects were released on a cash bond of Ksh. 500,000 or an alternative surety of the same amount, pending the hearing and determination of the case.

In a statement issued after the court appearance, Super Metro acknowledged the proceedings and said it respects the court’s decision.

“Super Metro acknowledges the court’s decision concerning the accident. Most importantly, we remain committed to the safety of our employees, customers and the broader community,” the company said in part.

The transport firm further disclosed that it has already initiated an internal review to establish whether any company procedures were breached and to strengthen its safety and compliance measures.

“We have already taken significant steps to review and strengthen our safety procedures and compliance measures. We will continue working constructively with relevant authorities and laying emphasis on preventive measures to curb such an occurrence in the future,” the statement added.

Family members told the court that Mureithi was a petrol station attendant in Athi River, and had only recently secured the job in an effort to raise money to cater for his ailing mother’s hospital bills.

After the incident, he was rushed to Shalom Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The case will now proceed to hearing as the court considers evidence surrounding the events that led to the death of the young commuter.
