Detectives have arrested a suspected drug trafficker and recovered 13 sacks of bhang valued at approximately KSh 8.1 million following a dramatic police chase along the Eldoret–Nakuru Highway.

According to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), detectives from the Anti-Narcotics Unit in the Rift Valley Region intercepted a blue Toyota Voxy (registration number KCS 496B) during a routine patrol on March 14, 2026, after the vehicle aroused suspicion.

High-Speed Pursuit

Police said the driver ignored orders to stop at a roadblock and instead sped off, prompting detectives to pursue the vehicle along the busy Eldoret–Nakuru Highway toward the Kaptembwa area.

During the high-speed chase, officers managed to deflate the vehicle’s right front tyre in an attempt to bring the suspect to a halt.

However, despite the damaged tyre, the driver continued driving toward the 140 Area before eventually abandoning the vehicle in a vacant plot near Kaptembwa Police Station and attempting to escape on foot.

Suspect Arrested

The suspect, identified as David Muraya, 35, was swiftly apprehended by the pursuing detectives.

A search of the abandoned vehicle led to the discovery of 13 sacks containing dry green plant material suspected to be cannabis sativa, commonly referred to as bhang.

Authorities said the recovered consignment weighed approximately 272 kilograms and had an estimated street value of KSh 8,160,000.

Court Appearance Expected

Muraya is currently being held in police custody and is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday, March 16, 2026, where he will likely face charges related to drug trafficking.

The DCI said investigations are ongoing to determine whether the suspect is part of a larger narcotics distribution network operating within the region.

Crackdown on Drug Trafficking

The investigative agency reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying operations aimed at curbing narcotics trafficking and dismantling criminal networks involved in the illicit drug trade across the country.

Authorities have warned that individuals involved in drug trafficking will face the full force of the law as the government continues to strengthen enforcement efforts against the illegal narcotics trade.
