EACC arrests Nakuru Water employee over Ksh.15,000 bribe in meter replacement scheme, recovers Ksh.133,000 in cash during operation.

Detectives from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) have arrested a staff member of Nakuru Water and Sewerage Company over allegations of bribery in a crackdown on corruption within public service delivery.

The suspect, Leonard Cheruiyot Mutai, a Leak Detection Officer, was apprehended on March 23, 2026, following a complaint lodged by a member of the public in Nakuru.

Bribe Demand Over Water Meter Replacement

According to the Commission, the complainant accused the officer of demanding a bribe of Ksh.15,000 to facilitate the replacement of a confiscated water meter in Langa Langa Estate.

The demand reportedly triggered an investigation by EACC officers, who launched a targeted operation to verify the claims and apprehend the suspect.

Caught in the Act

EACC detectives arrested Mutai during a sting operation while allegedly receiving the Ksh.15,000 bribe.

During the arrest, investigators recovered a total of Ksh.133,000 in cash. The money included:

  • Ksh.15,000 believed to be the bribe
  • Ksh.100,000 hidden inside socks
  • Ksh.18,000 found in his coat pocket

The recovery of additional cash has raised further questions about possible wider corruption activities.

Detention and Bail

Following his arrest, the suspect was taken to the Commission’s South Rift Regional Office in Nakuru for processing.

He was later detained at Central Police Station and is expected to be released on a police cash bail of Ksh.20,000 as investigations continue.

EACC Intensifies Anti-Corruption Crackdown

The arrest comes amid ongoing efforts by the EACC to curb corruption in public institutions, particularly in essential service sectors such as water provision.

The Commission has consistently urged members of the public to report cases of bribery and abuse of office, emphasizing the role of citizen cooperation in tackling graft.

Public Service Integrity Under Scrutiny

The incident has once again put public service delivery under scrutiny, with concerns growing over the prevalence of bribery in accessing basic services.

Residents have called for stricter oversight and accountability measures to ensure that essential services are delivered fairly and without exploitation.

As investigations continue, authorities are expected to determine whether additional suspects may be involved or if the case is part of a broader corruption network.
