The Standard Group Associate Editor, Alex Kiprotich, who was reportedly abducted along the Gilgil–Nakuru road on Tuesday night, has been found safe in a thicket in the Masinga area of Machakos County.
Kiprotich was discovered on Wednesday morning, hours after he was reportedly taken by unknown individuals while travelling towards Nakuru.
Witnesses said the journalist appeared shaken and had visible injuries when he was found. He was later taken to hospital for medical check-ups.
The location where he was found is more than 200 kilometres from the area where he was reportedly abducted.
His colleagues and family members had spent the night searching for him. They said they received calls from a particular number and, upon answering, found Kiprotich on the line.
Police were informed after his discovery and said they were investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The motive behind the reported abduction remains unclear.
A video purportedly capturing part of the incident has also circulated online. In the footage, a person believed to be Kiprotich can be heard screaming and asking what he had done to warrant being taken away.
According to reports, Kiprotich was travelling with his driver when their vehicle was allegedly blocked by another car. The occupants of the vehicle reportedly demanded that he get out.
Kiprotich is said to have locked the doors and windows of his vehicle after the car that had blocked them stopped ahead with its hazard lights on.
He was subsequently pulled out of the vehicle and driven away, according to the reported account.
The Standard Group Chief Executive Officer, Chaacha Mwita, had earlier called for Kiprotich’s immediate and safe release.
Mwita said the journalist was reportedly abducted shortly before 9:20 p.m. while travelling to Nakuru.
The Standard Group said Tuesday’s incident was the second time Kiprotich had reportedly been targeted within two months.
According to the company, armed men attempted to force Kiprotich from his vehicle on June 27, 2026, as he drove to work in Nakuru.
The company said Kiprotich managed to escape during the earlier incident after locking his vehicle and driving away.
Police investigations into the latest incident are ongoing.
