On March 20, 2025, Kenya celebrated World Oral Health Day by inaugurating a Community Oral Health Department at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) in Mosoriot. This initiative underscores the nation’s commitment to enhancing oral healthcare services and addressing the growing need for dental professionals in underserved regions.
The launch event was attended by Health Cabinet Secretary Dr. Deborah Mlongo Barasa and Principal Secretary for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni. Dr. Barasa emphasized the importance of integrating oral health into primary healthcare systems, highlighting that oral diseases significantly impact overall health and well-being. She stated, “By establishing this department, we are taking a crucial step towards ensuring that quality oral healthcare is accessible to all Kenyans, regardless of their geographic location.”
The new department at KMTC Mosoriot aims to train community oral health officers who will be deployed across the country to provide essential dental services, conduct community outreach programs, and promote oral health education. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to combat prevalent oral health issues in Kenya, such as dental caries, periodontal diseases, and oral cancers, which have been on the rise.
Mary Muthoni highlighted the government’s dedication to preventive care, noting that early detection and management of oral health conditions can prevent more severe health complications. She urged communities to prioritize oral hygiene and seek regular dental check-ups.
The establishment of the Community Oral Health Department aligns with Kenya’s Vision 2030 goals of providing equitable and affordable healthcare to its citizens. It also reflects the government’s recognition of the critical role that oral health plays in achieving overall health and economic development.
As Kenya continues to make strides in healthcare, the focus on oral health serves as a reminder of the interconnectedness of various health sectors and the importance of comprehensive approaches to public health challenges.
