Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP-K) leader has strongly criticized top officials from the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) and the National Intelligence Service (NIS) over their alleged involvement in politics. Speaking at a recent public gathering, the leader accused the military and intelligence heads of straying from their constitutional mandate by engaging in political affairs instead of focusing on national security.
The DAP-K leader warned that such actions undermine democracy and erode public trust in state institutions. “The military and intelligence services should remain neutral and not be used to advance political interests,” he stated.
The remarks come amid growing concerns that security agencies may be playing a role in shaping political narratives ahead of the 2027 general elections. Critics argue that the independence of these institutions must be preserved to ensure fairness and stability in governance.
The Kenyan constitution bars the military and intelligence services from engaging in politics, emphasizing their role in safeguarding national security. However, opposition leaders have repeatedly accused state agencies of being used to intimidate political opponents and influence electoral processes.
The DAP-K leader called on President William Ruto’s administration to ensure the independence of the security sector and prevent any misuse of these institutions for political gains. His sentiments add to the ongoing national debate on the role of state agencies in governance and democracy.
