More than 130 inmates have escaped from a high-security prison in Chad after a violent shootout left three people dead and wounded a state governor, according to local officials.
The escape happened late Friday night at the Mongo penitentiary, located just five kilometers from the town of Mongo in the central Guera Province. The incident reportedly began after inmates protested over food shortages.
Hassan Souleymane Adam, secretary general of Guera Province, confirmed:
“There are around 100 who escaped, three dead, and three wounded.”
However, a local official speaking anonymously stated that the actual number of escaped inmates is 132, confirming that prisoners managed to break into the prison manager’s office to steal firearms.
A shootout erupted between guards and inmates just as the provincial governor arrived at the prison. He was caught in the crossfire and sustained injuries.
Chad’s Justice Minister, Youssouf Tom, has flown to Mongo to investigate the incident and promised more precise updates once on the ground.
The Mongo prison revolt raises serious questions about Chad’s prison system, especially regarding living conditions, food supply, and security. The nation continues to grapple with instability and limited resources in its justice sector.
Authorities have launched a manhunt to recapture the fugitives and restore order to the region.
