Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins delivered a commanding performance on Saturday as he led his side to a 4-1 Premier League victory over Newcastle United, reigniting Villa’s push for a top-four finish and sending a clear message to head coach Unai Emery.
Watkins, who had been sidelined during both legs of Villa’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final against Paris Saint-Germain, made his feelings known with a fiery start at Villa Park, scoring within the first 30 seconds of the match. His explosive return was capped off with an assist for Ian Maatsen’s goal and two near misses that rattled the woodwork.
“I’ve been fuming to be honest,” Watkins told reporters post-match. “But all I can do is respond on the pitch, and today I did that.”
The goal marked Watkins’ 74th Premier League goal for Villa, equaling club legend Gabriel Agbonlahor’s record. He also made history by becoming the first Aston Villa player to score 15 or more goals in three consecutive Premier League seasons—a testament to his consistency and determination.
