A 16-year-old boy from Nyakiambi village in Molo, Nakuru County, has been arrested after confessing to the gruesome killing of his mother in a shocking incident that has left residents stunned.

According to local authorities, the teenager—who had dropped out of school—attacked and killed his mother after a heated argument over the identity of his biological father. Police say the confrontation turned violent when the mother reportedly declined to disclose the information, prompting the boy to strike her multiple times in the head with a blunt object.

The incident occurred on Friday afternoon, July 25, around 1:00 p.m. inside their family compound. In a chilling twist, the suspect allegedly attempted to cover up the crime by digging a shallow grave inside a neighboring house within the same compound, intending to secretly bury his mother’s body.

Confession and Arrest
The suspect was arrested on Sunday, July 27, after his uncle—who became suspicious—alerted police. Officers from Elburgon Police Station responded promptly and found the mother’s lifeless body hidden in one of the family’s structures.

“He confessed to killing the mother after she refused to tell him who his real father was,” said one senior officer. “He was angry and claimed he felt abandoned and lied to. After the act, he tried to hide the body, but relatives grew suspicious.”

The teenager is now in custody as police conduct further investigations. Authorities confirmed that the body has been moved to Elburgon Level Four Hospital morgue pending a post-mortem examination.

Community in Shock
The Nyakiambi community is grappling with the horrific nature of the crime. Neighbors and relatives expressed disbelief, describing the suspect as a quiet boy who rarely interacted with others.

“He kept to himself most of the time,” said one resident. “We never imagined he could do something like this, let alone to his own mother.”

Others noted signs of tension in the household, particularly about the boy’s father, whom he had never known. “There have been whispers in the village that the boy would ask his mother questions about his father,” said a relative. “But no one expected it to lead to this tragedy.”

Psychological Evaluation Pending
Police have stated that the suspect will undergo a psychological assessment to determine his mental state at the time of the killing. Child welfare advocates are also expected to be involved in the case, given the suspect’s age and the family circumstances.

“This case highlights the urgent need for mental health and family support systems in our communities,” said Mary Wanjiku, a psychologist based in Nakuru. “Children dealing with identity crises and unresolved trauma need counseling—not silence.”

Legal Proceedings to Follow
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are now handling the case. Once investigations are complete, the minor is expected to be arraigned in a juvenile court, where he could face murder charges.

The DCI is also probing whether there were any previous signs of abuse, neglect, or psychological distress in the household.

A Nation Reflects
This tragic case has reignited national debate about parenting, child welfare, and mental health support for young people in Kenya. It serves as a sobering reminder of the psychological toll that unresolved family issues can take on adolescents.

As the nation waits for answers, one fact remains chillingly clear: a family has been torn apart, a life has been lost, and a child now faces a future shaped by a moment of fatal rage.
