The ongoing Enhanced Continuous Voter Registration (ECVR) exercise is recording a strong surge in numbers, largely driven by youth-led mobilization efforts across the country.

According to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), a total of 1,370,930 new voters had been registered between March 30 and April 16, 2026.

The latest figures reflect a sharp acceleration in turnout, with 495,429 registrations recorded in just one week since the commission’s previous update on April 9.

In a statement, the IEBC expressed appreciation to Kenyans participating in the exercise:

“The Commission extends its deepest gratitude to the 1,370,930 Kenyans who have registered as new voters since the commencement of ECVR.”

Youth at the Centre of the Surge

Much of the momentum has been attributed to grassroots campaigns led by young people, including the Tuko Kadi movement—a civic initiative focused on encouraging voter registration.

In a post shared on X on Saturday, April 18, 2026, Tuko Kadi leader Allans Ademba highlighted the progress made so far.

“Tumepata kadi 1,370,930 na two weeks za ECVR… Tunapata at least kadi 100,000 daily… Tumebaki na almost 10 days za ECVR,” he said.

Ademba also noted that young people make up the majority of new registrants, a trend he said has been confirmed by IEBC data.

Ambitious Target in Sight

With about ten days remaining before the April 30 deadline, the movement is now aiming to hit 2.5 million new voters.

“2.5M inawezekana before 30th April. 2.5M strong,” Ademba added.

At the current pace—estimated at roughly 100,000 new registrations per day—the target appears achievable if the trend continues.

Strengthening Democratic Participation

The ECVR exercise remains a critical process in expanding Kenya’s voter base, particularly among first-time voters. Increased youth participation is being seen as a positive sign for democratic engagement and civic awareness.

Stakeholders continue to urge eligible Kenyans to take advantage of the remaining registration window, emphasizing the importance of participation in shaping the country’s future.

As the deadline approaches, all eyes remain on whether the current momentum can carry the exercise past the ambitious 2.5 million mark.
