Former Lugari Member of Parliament Enoch Kibunguchy has passed away while undergoing treatment at Eldoret Hospital following a prolonged illness.

Kibunguchy, who was 72 years old, served as Lugari MP between 2003 and 2007 after succeeding the late Cyrus Jirongo. Following the creation of Likuyani Constituency, he went on to represent the area in Parliament for two consecutive terms from 2013 to 2022.

Confirming his death, current Lugari MP Nabii Nabwera described Kibunguchy as a principled leader and a personal mentor whose counsel he deeply valued.

“Throughout his years in public service, Hon. Kibunguchy was known for his quiet determination, humility, and integrity,” Nabwera said. “He firmly believed that education was the greatest equaliser and consistently translated that belief into action.”

According to Nabwera, the former legislator played a key role in initiating and supporting the establishment of several schools in Lugari and Likuyani, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the education sector.

“The larger Lugari community has lost a towering yet gentle figure. I have lost a friend whose wisdom I treasured and whose presence I will dearly miss,” he added.

Kibunguchy’s death comes barely two weeks after the passing of his predecessor, former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, who died in a grisly road accident in Naivasha.

Jirongo, a former KANU power broker, died on December 13 at around 2am after his Mercedes-Benz collided with a 65-seater bus in the Karai area along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway while he was travelling to Nairobi.

Jirongo served as Lugari MP from 1997 to 2002 and later held the position of Minister for Rural Development during the late President Daniel arap Moi’s administration between March and December 2002. In 2022, he unsuccessfully contested the Kakamega gubernatorial seat under the United Democratic Party (UDP), losing to ODM’s Fernandes Barasa.
