At least four people were killed after Russia launched a large-scale overnight missile and drone attack on Ukraine, targeting energy infrastructure and residential areas across several regions, Ukrainian officials said on Saturday.
According to Ukrainian authorities, the strikes involved around 430 drones and 68 missiles, many of which were intercepted by air defence systems.
Energy Infrastructure Targeted
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said the main target of the attack was energy infrastructure near the capital, Kyiv.
The strikes also damaged residential buildings, schools, and business premises, raising concerns about the continued impact of the war on civilian life.
In addition to Kyiv, other regions affected by the attacks included:
- Sumy Oblast
- Kharkiv Oblast
- Dnipropetrovsk Oblast
- Mykolaiv Oblast
Despite the intensity of the bombardment, Ukrainian air defences reportedly shot down the majority of the incoming drones and missiles.
Rising Tensions Amid Global Distractions
The latest strikes come as global attention has partly shifted to the escalating conflict involving Iran and its regional tensions in the Middle East.
Zelenskyy warned that Moscow could attempt to take advantage of the geopolitical distraction to intensify attacks on Ukraine.
“Russia will try to exploit the war in the Middle East to cause even greater destruction here in Europe, in Ukraine,” the Ukrainian president wrote on the social media platform X.
He also urged Ukraine’s international partners to increase the production and supply of air-defence weapons, noting that stockpiles have been shrinking as Western allies support other conflicts.
Power Outages Reported
Ukraine’s Energy Ministry said the overnight attacks and continued shelling of frontline areas left consumers in six regions without electricity.
Russian attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure have been a key strategy during the war, especially during winter months when power disruptions can leave major cities without heating and electricity.
Residents Describe Destruction
Among those affected was Natalia Fetko, a 57-year-old resident whose apartment building was damaged in the strikes.
“There’s no way Russia will stop,” she said. “Nothing is enough for them.”
Casualties and Damage
Authorities confirmed that all four fatalities occurred in the Kyiv region, where 15 people were also injured.
According to regional military administrator Mykola Kalashnyk, damage was recorded across four districts in the Kyiv region, affecting homes and infrastructure.
NATO Jets Scrambled
The attacks also prompted neighbouring Poland, a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), to scramble fighter jets to protect its airspace.
However, Polish military officials later confirmed that no violations of Polish airspace were detected during the operation.
War Enters Fourth Year
The latest assault highlights the continuing intensity of the war that began with Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
While diplomatic efforts led by the United States have sought to push for a peace settlement, Ukrainian officials say Moscow has shown little interest in ending the conflict, as fighting continues along the eastern front.
