Lamu County, Kenya – May 2, 2025

A deadly ambush by suspected Al-Shabaab militants has left five police officers dead and eight others seriously injured in the volatile Boni Forest region near Rakei, Lamu County. The shocking incident occurred approximately three kilometres from the town of Lamu, triggering alarm across the region and a heightened state of alert among security forces.

According to Lamu County Police Commissioner Wesley Koech, preliminary intelligence suggests that the attackers—estimated to be over 70 armed militants—attempted to cross the Bodhei-Lamu border via Garissa before encountering officers attached to the Special Operations Group (SOG), a unit specifically trained to deal with high-risk threats in Kenya’s northern frontier.

“This was a well-coordinated infiltration attempt. The officers engaged the militants in heavy gunfire to repel the breach,” Commissioner Koech told reporters at a press briefing.

The officers, drawn from elite units tasked with securing the Boni Enclave Campaign area, were on routine patrol when the ambush occurred. The confrontation resulted in a fierce firefight in which five officers tragically lost their lives on the spot, while eight sustained various degrees of injuries. Emergency response teams promptly airlifted both the injured officers and the remains of the fallen to Nairobi for medical attention and postmortem procedures.

Al-Shabaab Threat Resurfaces in Lamu

The incident marks one of the deadliest in recent months and raises fresh concerns about the resilience and re-emergence of Al-Shabaab’s presence in Kenyan territory, particularly along the Garissa-Lamu border. Intelligence reports have long indicated that the dense and difficult terrain of Boni Forest provides cover for extremist cells seeking to evade detection by Kenyan security agencies.

“We believe the militants were intending to launch attacks inland after crossing the border. Our officers’ swift response may have prevented a major catastrophe,” Commissioner Koech added.

The SOG unit was reportedly tracking suspicious movements in the area following increased chatter from regional informants and drone surveillance over the forested border region.

Call for Vigilance and Community Cooperation

In light of the attack, Commissioner Koech has issued an urgent call for heightened public vigilance and cooperation.

“We urge all citizens, especially those living in border communities, to report any suspicious movements or unidentified individuals immediately. Public safety is a shared responsibility,” he emphasized.

The National Police Service (NPS) and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) are expected to deploy additional forces to the region in response to the attack. A joint operation to comb through the Boni Forest and flush out the remaining militants is already underway.

Political and Public Reactions

Leaders from across the country have condemned the attack and expressed condolences to the families of the deceased officers. Interior Cabinet Secretary Kithure Kindiki is expected to issue an official government statement later today, while local MPs have called for intensified military operations in known terrorist hideouts.

Lamu Senator Joseph Githuku stated,

“We salute the bravery of our officers who put their lives on the line. We must not let terrorists take root in our communities again. The government must act swiftly and decisively.”

Kenyans online have also taken to social media to express both grief and frustration over the continued insecurity in Lamu and northeastern regions, demanding better equipment and welfare for officers on the frontlines.

Ongoing Investigations

Investigations are ongoing to determine the full scope of the militants’ plan and how they were able to organize such a large infiltration. Authorities have not ruled out the possibility of internal collaborators or intelligence lapses.

Security Reminder

Kenyans are reminded to remain vigilant and report anything unusual by dialing 999, 112, or using the Nyumba Kumi initiative structures.

“Let us stand united against this threat. Terrorism has no place in Kenya,” Commissioner Koech concluded.
