The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has announced it is closing in on suspects linked to the cold-blooded murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament Ong’ondo Were, who was gunned down on Wednesday night along Ngong Road, near the City Mortuary roundabout.

In a statement released Friday afternoon, DCI officials said detectives have made “significant progress” in identifying leads after forensically reconstructing the MP’s final movements from Parliament to the scene of the fatal shooting.

“This detailed analysis has yielded significant leads, enabling investigators to narrow down to potential suspects,” the DCI said, while maintaining confidentiality to avoid jeopardizing ongoing investigations.

Premeditated Attack

The DCI further confirmed that preliminary investigations strongly indicate the killing was premeditated.

“The manner in which the ambush was executed points to a calculated and well-planned operation,” a senior detective close to the investigation told Mulembe Times on condition of anonymity.

According to early reports, the MP was being driven along Ngong Road when two unidentified men riding a motorcycle overtook the vehicle. One of them is said to have disembarked a few meters ahead, walked back, and shot the MP multiple times at close range. Were was seated in the front passenger seat.

The assassins then fled the scene, disappearing into traffic before police could respond.

Scene Reconstruction and Evidence Collection

DCI detectives from the Homicide Unit and Scenes of Crime division were seen combing through the area on Thursday, carefully reconstructing the events in a bid to gather forensic evidence. CCTV footage from nearby buildings has reportedly been obtained and is being reviewed frame-by-frame.

“We are looking at every possible clue, from mobile phone pings to license plate recognition and forensic analysis of bullet casings,” said the detective.

Autopsy Scheduled for Monday

An autopsy on the MP’s body is scheduled for Monday, May 5, and will be conducted by Chief Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor. The examination will seek to confirm the number of gunshot wounds and the specific cause of death, which investigators believe may further clarify the trajectory and type of weapon used.

Family members, friends, and political allies have continued to express shock and outrage over the brutal killing, calling for swift justice.

Public Urged to Remain Calm

While the DCI refrained from releasing detailed information about the suspects, the agency called on the public to refrain from speculation and allow investigators time to piece together the full picture.

“We urge the public to remain calm and to volunteer any information that may assist our ongoing investigations,” the agency’s statement read.

National Outcry and Condolences

The assassination has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, with lawmakers across the political divide condemning the killing.

Speaker of the National Assembly Moses Wetang’ula described the killing as “a heinous attack on democracy and the rule of law.”

“Hon. Ong’ondo Was a passionate legislator who served his people with dedication. His loss is a tragedy not just for Kasipul, but for Kenya as a whole.”

President William Ruto is expected to address the matter formally during the weekend. Sources close to State House indicate that heightened security measures are being discussed for elected leaders following a rise in threats and politically linked violence.

A Call for Justice

As the nation mourns the death of MP Ong’ondo Were, questions continue to swirl about the motive behind the assassination. Was it politically driven? Was it personal? Or was it something more sinister?

The answers may lie with the suspects now within the DCI’s crosshairs.

“Justice must be served. Those responsible must face the full force of the law,” said Human Rights Watch Kenya Director Lucy Muthoni.

For now, all eyes are on the DCI—and the people of Kasipul are left grieving a man they say was “their voice in Parliament.”
