Nairobi, Kenya – May 3, 2025

In a stunning political development, Eugene Wamalwa, the leader of Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K), has successfully spearheaded the unification of several opposition heavyweights, including former political adversaries Dr. Fred Matiang’i and Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. This unprecedented alliance, forged through months of dialogue and negotiation, aims to form a powerful opposition bloc ahead of the 2027 General Election, potentially providing a strong challenge to the ruling Kenya Kwanza Alliance led by President William Ruto.

The coalition, dubbed as a “unity for change” movement, includes a cross-section of prominent political figures, many of whom were once bitter rivals. The full lineup of leaders now part of this unified opposition coalition includes Kalonzo Musyoka of the Wiper Party, Martha Karua of Narc-Kenya, former UNCTAD Secretary-General Mukhisa Kituyi, former Public Service CS Justin Muturi, former Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi, Jubilee National Chair Torome Saitoti, and several other influential politicians.

This powerful coalition was officially formed after a strategic meeting on April 29, 2025, at Nairobi’s Karen Blixen Restaurant, where the leaders agreed to set up a technical working team. The task of this team is to formulate a coherent strategy that will guide the coalition’s operations leading up to the 2027 elections. One of the key goals is to identify a consensus presidential candidate by the end of next year.

Uniting Former Adversaries

At the heart of this coalition is the remarkable political rapprochement between Fred Matiang’i, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary, and Rigathi Gachagua, who had been at odds in the past. Matiang’i, who had been one of President Ruto’s key allies during the previous administration, now finds himself at odds with his former boss, positioning himself as a candidate for the presidency in 2027.

During his recent meet-the-people tours in Kisii and Nyamira counties, Matiang’i officially announced his intention to run for president. He emphasized the importance of national unity and addressing the country’s deep-rooted issues. “I have listened to the people, and I’m ready to serve this nation and bring the change that Kenyans are yearning for,” Matiang’i told a crowd of supporters.

Despite being impeached in 2024, Rigathi Gachagua has shown steadfast commitment to the coalition. He expressed his readiness to support whoever the coalition decides to back as their candidate, even if it isn’t him. “The unity of the opposition is paramount, and I will stand by the chosen candidate for the good of the nation,” Gachagua remarked.

Strategic Regional Mobilization

The coalition has already begun laying down plans for its regional outreach. Leaders have been assigned specific roles in mobilizing their supporters in key regions. Eugene Wamalwa will focus on consolidating support in the Western region, while Gachagua, Muturi, Linturi, and Karua will concentrate on rallying the Mt. Kenya region. Matiang’i and Kalonzo will spearhead campaigns in Ukambani and Gusii respectively, with all leaders working towards strengthening the coalition’s base.

Additionally, Mukhisa Kituyi and Martha Karua are expected to lead initiatives aimed at uniting smaller political parties to boost the coalition’s political influence.

Overcoming Internal Tensions

Despite the shared goal of unity, the formation of the opposition coalition has not been without its challenges. Tensions have already begun to emerge within the ranks, especially regarding the potential presidential candidate. Some members of Kalonzo Musyoka’s camp have expressed concerns over the possibility of Matiang’i being the flagbearer, citing his close association with President Ruto in the past. Moreover, the exclusion of Jubilee Secretary-General Jeremiah Kioni from the coalition’s leadership ranks has also stirred discontent among certain factions of the party.

However, coalition leaders remain optimistic, with Wamalwa urging all members to put aside their differences for the greater good. “We are working towards a common cause: to provide an alternative leadership for Kenya that is rooted in fairness, accountability, and progress,” Wamalwa stated.

The Road to 2027

As Kenya’s political landscape continues to evolve, the success or failure of this opposition coalition will have profound implications for the 2027 elections. If the leaders can maintain their unity and effectively harness the support of their constituents, they could present a formidable challenge to the current administration. As the coalition fine-tunes its strategy and expands its grassroots support, all eyes will be on the upcoming 2027 General Election, where the newly unified opposition is expected to play a pivotal role.

For now, the political chess game in Kenya has reached a new chapter, with Eugene Wamalwa at the forefront, guiding a team of seasoned leaders to unite former enemies in the pursuit of a common political goal. Only time will tell if their vision for change will resonate with the Kenyan electorate.
