Over 1,080 families in Nairobi’s Mukuru informal settlement are set to receive keys to their new homes as part of the government’s Affordable Housing Program. The completed Phase 1 of the Mukuru Met Site project marks a significant step in addressing urban housing challenges.

Beneficiaries participated in a sensitization forum ahead of the official handover ceremony, which President William Ruto is expected to preside over. The project aims to uplift residents from substandard living conditions, offering them decent housing options.

The development includes 26 blocks of bedsitters, 24 blocks of one-bedroom units (70% complete), and 48 blocks of two-bedroom units (55% complete). Rent is set at Ksh 3,898 monthly, covering mortgage repayment, insurance, and service charges, effectively reducing previous rental costs by nearly 50%.

An additional six blocks are expected to be ready in the next six months, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to over 2,000. The project is part of a broader initiative to construct 13,250 housing units in the area.

Residents like Peter Obiri, a small business owner, and Peninah Wanjiru, a mother of ten, express hope that these new homes will provide stability and improved living conditions for their families.

The Mukuru Affordable Housing Project is a key component of the government’s strategy to provide decent housing and transform informal settlements across Kenya.
