Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi has been released by Tanzanian authorities after several days of detention, following diplomatic intervention and public outcry. The release was confirmed by Prime Cabinet Secretary and Foreign Affairs Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi on Thursday, May 22, 2025.

Mwangi had traveled to Tanzania to attend the court hearing of opposition leader Tundu Lissu. He was arrested alongside Ugandan journalist Agather Atuhaire and detained without formal charges. Their detention sparked widespread concern among human rights organizations and the public.

The Kenyan government expressed deep concern over Mwangi’s detention, citing violations of the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations, which mandates that consular officers have access to their nationals in detention. In a formal protest letter, Kenya demanded immediate consular access or the release of Mwangi.

Following mounting pressure, Mwangi was deported by road and left in Ukunda, Kwale County, near the Kenya-Tanzania border. He was subsequently taken to a hospital in Diani for medical evaluation. Family members reported that he appeared injured and frail upon his return.

The Kenya National Commission on Human Rights confirmed receiving Mwangi and emphasized the need for adherence to international human rights standards.

Mwangi’s detention and release highlight ongoing concerns about the treatment of activists and the importance of diplomatic engagement in safeguarding citizens’ rights abroad.
