Kiambu County, Kenya — May 30, 2025
Kelvin Kasyoki Kyalo and Wilson Ngethe Waweru, who were apprehended at their hideout in Thogoto, Kiambu County, while inside a Mazda CX-5.
Two suspected criminals linked to a spate of robberies across Nairobi’s Embakasi area and Kikuyu in Kiambu have been arrested by police in a coordinated operation led by officers from the National Police Service.
The suspects, identified as Kelvin Kasyoki Kyalo and Wilson Ngethe Waweru, were apprehended on Thursday at a hideout in Thogoto, Kiambu County, while reportedly inside a Mazda CX-5 vehicle believed to have been used in several of the alleged crimes.
According to a statement released by the police on Friday, the vehicle’s original registration number — KDC 077P — had been tampered with and altered to read KDD 677P, in what authorities believe was an attempt to obscure its identity and avoid detection.
“In a well-coordinated operation, National Police Service officers, today, 30 May 2025, apprehended two notorious criminals, one Kelvin Kasyoki Kyalo and Wilson Ngethe Waweru, who are suspected of orchestrating a series of crimes in Embakasi and Kikuyu,” read the statement in part.
Items Recovered Suggest Widespread Criminal Activity
Following the arrest, a search of the suspects’ vehicle revealed a disturbing cache of tools and equipment commonly associated with theft, burglary, and vehicle break-ins. Among the items recovered were:
- Master keys used to unlock a variety of car locks,
- Crude weapons, believed to have been used in home invasions or burglaries,
- Number plate stickers, presumably used to mask or alter the identity of vehicles,
- Additional paraphernalia linked to illegal activity.
Police suspect the two individuals may be part of a broader criminal syndicate operating in the Nairobi Metropolitan area. Investigations are ongoing to establish whether the suspects had accomplices and to trace additional crimes they may be linked to.
Public Cooperation Applauded
Authorities have commended the role of vigilant citizens in providing key intelligence that led to the arrests. A police spokesperson acknowledged that the successful operation was largely aided by a tip-off from concerned members of the public who had observed suspicious activities in the area.
“We thank members of the public for the vital information that enabled us to swiftly take action and neutralize this criminal threat. Community-police collaboration remains a critical pillar in ensuring public safety,” the spokesperson said.
The suspects are currently being held in custody and are expected to be arraigned in court in the coming days to face multiple charges related to robbery with violence, possession of burglary tools, and possible vehicle theft.
The arrests come amid increasing pressure on law enforcement agencies to curb rising insecurity in urban and peri-urban areas of Nairobi and Kiambu, where cases of mugging, burglary, and carjacking have been on the rise in recent months.
Security Agencies Urged to Stay Vigilant
With the successful apprehension of the two suspects, security experts are now calling on the police to intensify surveillance and intelligence operations to dismantle organized gangs operating in and around the capital.
Local leaders from Embakasi and Kikuyu have also weighed in, urging residents to report suspicious activity and continue working closely with security agencies to keep their neighborhoods safe.
As investigations continue, the National Police Service has reaffirmed its commitment to rooting out criminal elements and maintaining law and order across the country.
