The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has made serious allegations against Nairobi Central Police Station OCS, Samson Taalam, accusing him of interfering with crucial CCTV evidence in the ongoing investigation into the death of Albert Ojwang’.

In a submission before the Milimani Law Courts, the DPP claimed that Taalam procured the services of a technician to tamper with surveillance footage from the police station. The footage is believed to be a key piece of evidence in uncovering what transpired before Ojwang’ died in police custody—a case that has sparked public outrage and renewed scrutiny of police conduct.

Further raising concern, the DPP revealed that Taalam’s mobile phone had been seized for forensic analysis, suggesting it could contain information relevant to the case. The prosecution expressed fears that Taalam, by virtue of his senior position, might intimidate or influence officers who were present at the station on the day in question.

In light of these concerns, the DPP is seeking to have Taalam detained for 21 days to give the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) enough time to conduct its investigations without interference. The application emphasizes the need to safeguard the integrity of the investigation and protect potential witnesses from undue pressure.

The court has yet to issue a ruling on the DPP’s request, and the defence is expected to challenge the proposed pre-trial detention.

As the case develops, the allegations against a senior-ranking officer have intensified public interest in the death of Albert Ojwang’—a case that continues to stir demands for accountability and justice.
