Siaya Governor James Aggrey Bob Orengo, a veteran lawyer, human rights activist, and political figure in Kenya, has returned to the public spotlight after several weeks of absence that sparked intense speculation about his health and political future.

Orengo, who began his political career in the early 1980s as Member of Parliament for Ugenya, has held a series of high-profile positions in government. He has served as Minister for Lands, Senator for Siaya, and Minority Leader in the Senate, earning a reputation as one of Kenya’s most outspoken defenders of democracy and the rule of law. On August 25, 2022, he was sworn in as the second Governor of Siaya County, succeeding Cornel Rasanga.

In recent weeks, however, Orengo’s sudden disappearance from public events raised eyebrows. He was notably absent from county functions and national forums, fueling rumors about his health and even claims of his resignation. Some reports alleged he had stepped down, while others suggested he was seriously ill.

It later emerged that the governor had traveled overseas for undisclosed private matters. During his absence, a document purporting to be his resignation letter circulated widely online, prompting concern among supporters. The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) quickly dismissed the letter as fake, urging the public to ignore unfounded claims.

Orengo made his much-anticipated return to the public scene on Thursday, August 8, 2025, attending the funeral of former Karachuonyo MP Phoebe Asiyo in Homa Bay County. Addressing mourners, the governor brushed off the rumors, declaring:

“I am alive. I am stronger than ever. I am not going anywhere.”

His statement, delivered with a smile, appeared aimed at silencing doubts about his health and commitment to serving the people of Siaya. ODM leaders present at the event reiterated their support for him, affirming that he remains fully in charge of county affairs.

With his reappearance, Orengo has reassured his constituents that he is firmly back at the helm of Siaya County’s leadership, vowing to continue implementing his development agenda despite the recent controversy over his absence.
