Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera has officially conceded defeat in the country’s recent presidential election, admitting that his main rival, Peter Mutharika, has secured what he called an “insurmountable lead.”

Speaking in a televised address to the nation on Wednesday, Chakwera confirmed that he had personally called Mutharika to congratulate him and to recognize the outcome of the vote. He said his decision was driven by respect for the will of Malawians and the country’s Constitution.

“It is only right that I concede defeat out of respect for your will as citizens and out of respect for the Constitution,” Chakwera stated. He also appealed to his supporters to remain calm and to embrace peace during the transition period, promising to ensure a smooth handover of power.

Chakwera, who rose to power in 2020 after a historic court-ordered election rerun, faced increasing public criticism during his presidency. Rising living costs, economic hardships, and public frustration over unemployment and governance weighed heavily on his administration. His concession speech reflected an awareness of this disappointment, though he urged citizens not to lose hope in Malawi’s democratic process.

Partial results released by the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) had already shown Mutharika, 85, holding a commanding and likely decisive lead over Chakwera, 70. Although the commission was yet to officially declare the winner, the numbers suggested that Mutharika’s victory was certain, prompting Chakwera to concede ahead of the final announcement.

The MEC was expected to release the complete and final results later on Wednesday. Election observers noted that Chakwera’s early concession could help reduce political tensions and foster a peaceful transition. Still, some groups emphasized the importance of transparency in the final tally to maintain public trust in the electoral process.

Chakwera’s acknowledgment of defeat marks a major political turning point for Malawi. His decision not only clears the path for Mutharika’s return to power but also underscores the role of leadership in respecting democratic principles.

As Malawians await the official declaration of results, the concession has already set the tone for what many hope will be a peaceful transfer of power, reinforcing Malawi’s reputation as one of the more stable democracies in the region.
