Veteran politician Martha Karua has formally declared her intention to run for the presidency in Kenya’s 2027 general election, promising to serve only a single term if elected. The announcement was made during the People’s Liberation Party (PLP) National Delegates Conference held on Friday, where Karua emphasized that her candidacy is rooted in public service rather than personal ambition.
Speaking to party delegates, Karua highlighted the need for leadership that restores trust in Kenya’s democratic institutions and promotes transparency. She framed her campaign as an effort to “demystify power,” challenging the tendency of leaders in Kenya and across Africa to cling to office for extended periods. “I believe that in five years it is possible to lay a foundation. Nobody will ever finish the job of making Kenya prosperous. You lay a foundation and you wait for the next team to further it,” Karua said.
The declaration comes at a time when the opposition is strategizing to present a united front against President William Ruto in 2027. Notably, some key opposition figures, including former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, were absent from the event, raising questions about potential divisions within opposition ranks. Despite this, Karua urged citizens and opposition leaders to rally behind her vision, stressing that the movement is about serving the Kenyan people rather than advancing individual ambitions.
If successful, Karua would become the third woman in Kenyan history to contest the presidency, following Charity Ngilu and Wangari Maathai.
