Former Citizen TV journalist Kimani Mbugua has died, reportedly by suicide, after a long struggle with mental health challenges. His death occurred on the night of October 14 at the Mombasa Rescue Centre, where he had been undergoing mental health rehabilitation. The news of his passing was first shared by former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko, who expressed deep sorrow over the loss and revealed that investigations were underway to confirm the circumstances surrounding his death.
Sonko stated that it was believed Kimani had taken his own life, adding that a police report would soon clarify the details. He extended his condolences to Kimani’s family, friends, and colleagues, describing the incident as a tragic end to a young man’s promising life.
Kimani Mbugua had previously opened up about his battle with bipolar disorder, a condition that had severely affected both his personal life and career. Over the years, he had been hospitalized several times and even faced periods of homelessness. In 2023, he shared a video online pleading for help, revealing the depth of his struggles and the toll his condition had taken on him.
Kimani began his media career at just 19 years old, joining the Nation Media Group before moving to Royal Media Services, where he gained national recognition through programs such as The Trend, which he co-hosted alongside Larry Madowo. His charisma and journalistic skill made him one of the most promising young journalists of his generation.
However, in 2020, after being diagnosed with bipolar disorder, his life began to spiral downward. He was admitted to several rehabilitation facilities, including Mathari Mental Hospital and later the Mombasa Rescue Centre. His father publicly confirmed his diagnosis, and several public figures came forward to offer financial and emotional support to help with his recovery.
Kimani’s passing has left the media fraternity and many Kenyans in shock. Those who knew him remember him as a gifted storyteller and a vibrant personality whose light dimmed too soon. His death also reignites a national conversation about mental health awareness and the urgent need for stronger support systems for individuals battling psychological challenges.
Police are continuing investigations into the circumstances surrounding his death as tributes pour in for the young journalist whose journey, though brief, left a lasting impression on Kenya’s media landscape.
