Meru, Kenya — Police in Meru County have seized 15 bales of cannabis sativa in a major anti-narcotics operation aimed at dismantling drug trafficking networks in the region.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), officers acted on a tip-off from members of the public and intercepted an Isuzu lorry transporting the drugs along the Ruiri–Nchiru Road in Imenti North Sub-County.
Upon spotting the officers, the driver reportedly abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene, prompting a chase. Police later conducted a thorough search of the truck and discovered the bhang concealed in a hidden compartment within the vehicle’s body.
The officers secured the narcotics and towed the lorry to Meru Police Station, where it is being held as evidence as investigators pursue the suspect.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter), the National Police Service commended the public for its cooperation in providing actionable intelligence that led to the successful seizure.
“We encourage the public to continue supporting the fight against narcotics by sharing information,” NPS stated.
The latest seizure highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement agencies to combat drug trafficking in Meru and across Kenya. Authorities say increased collaboration between security agencies and local residents has led to a rise in successful operations against narcotics cartels in recent months.
Police have launched a manhunt for the escaped driver, believed to be part of a larger network supplying cannabis within the region. The suspect will face charges related to drug trafficking once apprehended.
