A young Malian woman known for her patriotic TikTok videos has been abducted and executed by armed militants, shocking the nation and drawing international condemnation.
Mariam Cisse, a social media influencer from the northern town of Tonka, was kidnapped on Thursday by unidentified gunmen and later shot dead in a public square, according to Mali’s state broadcaster ORTM and multiple local sources.
Cisse, who had nearly 100,000 followers on TikTok, had become well-known for posting videos praising Mali’s armed forces and expressing support for their fight against extremist insurgents.
In one of her most popular videos, she appeared in military fatigues, smiling confidently as she declared, “Vive Mali” — “Long live Mali.” Her messages of unity and patriotism earned her admiration from many young Malians but also drew the attention of extremist groups active in the region.
Abduction in Broad Daylight
According to reports, Cisse was taken from Tonka’s main market in broad daylight on Thursday. Witnesses said the armed men arrived suddenly, surrounded her, and forced her into a waiting vehicle.
“Mariam was forcibly taken from the market in front of everyone,” one local source told reporters. “People were terrified and couldn’t intervene.”
While the exact timing of her execution remains unclear, one source said it occurred on Friday, while state TV and another local source reported it happened on Saturday. Both accounts indicate that the killing was carried out in public.
Neither of the sources who spoke to journalists witnessed the shooting directly, but one said they had heard the details from someone who was in the crowd at the time, while the other was informed by Cisse’s family.
Militants Suspected
Although no group has claimed responsibility, investigators and local residents suspect members of Jama’at Nusrat al-Islam wal-Muslimin (JNIM) — an al Qaeda-linked insurgent group — were behind the attack.
The northern region of Mali, including the town of Tonka, has been the scene of intense conflict between the Malian army and jihadist groups seeking to establish control over rural areas.
One local security analyst said the killing was likely intended as a warning to others who publicly express support for the government or military.
“She was a symbol of resistance, a civilian voice supporting the army. The extremists wanted to silence that voice,” the analyst noted.
State Condemnation
In a somber statement, Mali’s state broadcaster ORTM condemned the killing, describing Cisse as a “young woman who sought only to promote her community and encourage the army in its mission to protect people and their property.”
Officials from Mali’s military government have not yet issued a formal response, but sources close to the Ministry of Communication said the incident has deeply unsettled the administration.
Cisse’s death highlights the dangerous environment for civilians and social media users in Mali, where jihadist groups continue to target those perceived as supporting the government or army.
Mounting Crisis
The killing comes amid a worsening security and humanitarian crisis in Mali. A two-month-long fuel blockade imposed by al Qaeda-linked militants has severely disrupted daily life, with shortages crippling transportation and trade in the capital, Bamako.
Observers fear the blockade and ongoing attacks could be part of a broader campaign to destabilize the military-led government, which seized power in a 2021 coup.
Despite recent partnerships with Russian forces and the withdrawal of UN peacekeepers, Mali’s army continues to face growing pressure from JNIM and other armed factions expanding their control across northern and central regions.
As tributes poured in online, many users remembered Mariam Cisse not just as a TikToker, but as a voice of courage in one of Africa’s most volatile conflict zones.
