Molo Member of Parliament Kuria Kimani has found himself at the centre of a contentious debate after questions surfaced over the ownership and acquisition of a Sh105 million Mercedes-Benz vehicle, sparking discussions about asset transparency and ethical conduct among public officials.

The controversy erupted when details about the high-end vehicle — its value and method of acquisition — began circulating in political and social circles, prompting critics to demand clarity on whether proper procedures were followed and whether the asset was accurately declared in accordance with the law.

Kuria Kimani, a well-known figure in Kenyan politics with a strong support base in Molo Constituency, maintains that the luxury vehicle is legitimately his. Supporters argue that as a private citizen and elected representative, he has the right to own personal property, provided it was acquired legally, declared in official documents, and all applicable taxes and duties were paid.

However, detractors have seized on the issue to raise broader concerns about accountability among public officers. They contend that the sheer value of the car — far beyond the reach of average Kenyans — warrants scrutiny, particularly in a context where leaders are expected to set an example in transparency and public trust. Critics have questioned whether the asset was properly accounted for in the MP’s asset declaration to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), and whether all statutory requirements, including tax and import duties, were met at the time of purchase.

The matter has drawn attention from legal experts and ethics observers, who point out that public officers are required by law to declare all assets and liabilities within a specified timeframe after taking office. Failure to submit accurate declarations can trigger investigations and potential sanctions. In this case, analysts say the outcome may hinge on whether Kuria Kimani included the Mercedes-Benz in his official asset declaration and whether he complied with relevant financial and legal obligations during its acquisition.

Supporters of the MP have dismissed the controversy as politically motivated, suggesting that opponents are using the issue to tarnish his reputation ahead of future elections and to distract from his performance in office. They stress that ownership of high-value assets by public figures is not in itself illegal, so long as the circumstances of purchase and disclosure comply with the law.

Opposition leaders and civil society groups, meanwhile, have called for an independent investigation to establish the facts and ensure accountability. They argue that transparency on matters of wealth and asset ownership by elected representatives is critical for building public confidence in democratic institutions and curbing perceptions of impropriety. Some have urged parliament’s Ethics and Integrity Committee to review the case and make determinations that could set precedents for future conduct by public officers.

Kuria Kimani’s camp has indicated that he is willing to cooperate with any lawful inquiry and has reiterated his commitment to transparent leadership. While he has not publicly responded to every allegation, his supporters say he welcomes clarity on the matter and insists that he has complied with legal requirements.

As the dispute continues to unfold, it has captured the attention of many Kenyans who view the matter through varying lenses — some as a necessary test of accountability for leaders, others as a political skirmish in the run-up to broader electoral contests.

Regardless of perspective, the situation highlights ongoing public interest in how elected officials handle personal assets and underscores the importance of legal compliance and ethical behaviour in maintaining trust between leaders and the communities they serve.
