The government has released KSh44,245,066,500.85 as capitation for Term 1 for learners in all public basic education institutions.
In a statement on Friday, January 2, 2026, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Migos said the funds are meant to ensure the smooth conduct of school activities in the new term, which begins January 5, with Grade 10 learners reporting to senior schools from January 12.
“The Government affirms its commitment to fulfil its duty to learners and educational institutions, in line with Article 53 of the Constitution that entitles every child to free and compulsory basic education,” Migos said.
The KSh44.245 billion has been apportioned across various levels of basic education as follows:
- Free Primary Education: KSh3,703,074,646.10
- Free Day Junior School Education: KSh14,459,193,520.00
- Free Day Secondary Education: KSh26,082,798,334.75
The Ministry also emphasized that school fees payable by learners in senior schools remain unchanged. The government will continue providing capitation at KSh22,244 per learner per year.
School heads and principals have been warned against imposing extra levies or fees, with Migos noting:
“School heads and principals are directed to ensure prudent use of these public resources entrusted to their care for the benefit of learners… As a Ministry, we will deal firmly with any verified cases of misappropriation of resources and the imposition of extra levies or fees.”
The Ministry stressed that the release of capitation funds aims to guarantee equitable access to quality education while upholding the government’s constitutional obligations to learners.
