The chairman of Atheists in Kenya Society, Harrison Nyende Mumia, has been charged with multiple counts of false publication under the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act, 2018, after allegedly sharing fake images of President William Ruto on social media.
Mumia, who also goes by the alias Robinson Kipruto Ngetich, was arraigned in court and released on a cash bail of KSh 500,000.
According to the charge sheet, the accused is alleged to have knowingly published false information on Facebook and Instagram on December 30, 2025, while at an unknown location within Kenya.
In the first two counts, prosecutors allege that Mumia used a pseudo Facebook account under the name Robinson Kipruto Ngetich to publish manipulated images showing President Ruto lying on a bed and falsely portraying him as deceased. Another image allegedly depicted the President on a hospital bed in a critical medical condition.
The prosecution maintains that the information shared was false and that the accused was fully aware of its falsity at the time of publication.
In the third and fourth counts, Mumia is accused of posting similar false images on his Instagram account, @harrisonmumia, again depicting the President as critically ill or dead.
The charges were brought under Section 22(1) of the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act No. 5 of 2018, which criminalizes the intentional publication of false information through electronic platforms.
The case is scheduled for mention on a later date for further directions as investigations continue.
