Manchester United boosted their chances of securing a top-four finish in the Premier League after defeating Aston Villa 3–1 at Old Trafford on Sunday.
The victory kept United third in the standings, opening a three-point gap over fourth-placed Aston Villa in the race for UEFA Champions League qualification.
Carrick’s United Continue Strong Run
Interim manager Michael Carrick has overseen a strong revival since taking charge following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.
The win over Villa marked Carrick’s seventh victory in nine matches, strengthening his case to be appointed permanently despite uncertainty from United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe, who recently praised his work but stopped short of guaranteeing him the role long-term.
Casemiro Breaks the Deadlock
After a slow first half, United finally broke through in the 53rd minute.
A powerful strike from Bryan Mbeumo forced a save from Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, leading to a corner.
United captain Bruno Fernandes delivered a curling ball to the near post, where Casemiro rose highest to guide a header past Martinez.
With the Brazilian midfielder’s contract set to expire at the end of the season, United fans chanted “one more year” in appreciation.
Villa Hit Back Through Barkley
Villa responded in the 64th minute when Ross Barkley fired home a powerful shot from 12 yards out, beating United goalkeeper Senne Lammens after defensive confusion.
It was Barkley’s first Premier League start in 14 months.
Cunha and Sesko Seal the Win
United quickly regained control.
In the 71st minute, Matheus Cunha ran onto a superb through ball from Bruno Fernandes and calmly slotted the ball into the far corner.
The assist marked Fernandes’ 16th league assist of the season, surpassing the club record set by David Beckham during the 1999–2000 campaign.
Fernandes has now reached 100 assists for Manchester United across all competitions since joining from Sporting CP in 2020.
Substitute Benjamin Sesko sealed the win in the 81st minute, scoring with a deflected strike shortly after coming off the bench.
