Manchester City’s Spanish manager Pep Guardiola reacts during the English Premier League football match between Manchester City and Nottingham Forest at the Etihad Stadium in Manchester, north west England, on March 4, 2026.

Pep Guardiola believes Sunday’s League Cup final against Arsenal will be a defining moment for Manchester City as they look to revive their season.

City head into the Wembley showdown under pressure following a disappointing midweek exit from the UEFA Champions League, where they were knocked out by Real Madrid for the third consecutive year. Domestically, Guardiola’s side also find themselves trailing Arsenal by nine points in the Premier League title race.

Speaking ahead of the final, Guardiola described the encounter as a crucial test of his team’s current level.

“We have got to Wembley 22 times in 10 years — it’s an honour and a big challenge,” said Guardiola. “For the team, it’s a big moment. They are an exceptional team, and it’s a big challenge for us to see our level.”

Arsenal, under Mikel Arteta, are chasing their first trophy in six years and remain on course for a historic quadruple — the League Cup, FA Cup, Premier League, and Champions League. Their strong form this season has positioned them as one of Europe’s most dominant sides.

In contrast, City are aiming to avoid a second straight season without silverware, having ended the previous campaign empty-handed for the first time in eight years.

Despite the high stakes, Guardiola played down the idea that winning Sunday’s final would directly influence the Premier League title race.

“I don’t know. Of course winning helps, just for the fact that winning helps,” he said. “We can win the competition on Sunday and after, in the league, it can go the opposite way.”

The City boss emphasized the importance of maintaining focus amid a congested fixture schedule across multiple competitions.

“When there are many competitions and many games in a short time — Champions League, FA Cup, Carabao Cup, Premier League — you have to have the ability to forget and move forward in both good and bad moments.”

Guardiola also confirmed that goalkeeper James Trafford will start in the final, continuing his role as City’s first-choice keeper in domestic cup competitions ahead of Gianluigi Donnarumma.

With both sides eyeing momentum and silverware, Sunday’s final promises to be a high-stakes battle that could shape the trajectory of their seasons.
