Bruno Fernandes matched the Premier League record for most assists in a single season after helping Manchester United secure a dramatic 3-2 victory over Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford.

Fernandes registered his 20th assist of the campaign when his dangerous cross was turned home by Bryan Mbeumo, drawing level with Premier League legends Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne.

The Portuguese midfielder, recently named Football Writers’ Player of the Season, once again proved decisive in a thrilling contest packed with goals, controversy and late drama.

United made a flying start and took the lead after just five minutes when Luke Shaw volleyed home to give the hosts an early advantage.

Despite both teams creating several chances before halftime, the score remained 1-0 until Forest found an equaliser shortly after the restart. Defender Morato headed in at the back post from Elliot Anderson’s inviting delivery.

United responded almost immediately through Matheus Cunha, whose strike sparked controversy after the ball appeared to strike Mbeumo’s arm in the build-up. Despite a VAR review, referee Michael Salisbury allowed the goal to stand.

Forest nearly hit back instantly, but goalkeeper Senne Lammens made an important save to deny Morgan Gibbs-White.

Fernandes then produced another moment of brilliance with 14 minutes remaining, delivering a low cross that Mbeumo converted to make it 3-1 and secure the midfielder’s record-equalling assist.

Forest refused to surrender and reduced the deficit again when Gibbs-White finished neatly from another Anderson delivery. The England international was making his return after recently suffering a serious facial injury in a collision with Robert Sanchez earlier this month.

There was also an emotional moment for Casemiro, who received a standing ovation from the Old Trafford crowd during what could be his final home appearance for the club before being replaced by Mason Mount.

Fernandes nearly made history outright in stoppage time when Diogo Dalot struck the post from another perfectly weighted pass by the United captain.

The victory ensured United finished third in the league standings and continued their impressive form under interim manager Michael Carrick, who is reportedly close to signing a two-year contract to remain in charge at Old Trafford.
