Three people were injured by gunfire and are currently receiving treatment at Molo Level 4 Hospital following a violent confrontation between supporters of Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika and Kuresoi North MP Alfred Mutai during a women and youth empowerment event in Kuresoi North, Nakuru County.
The incident occurred at Umoja Secondary School, where the empowerment programme was being led by Governor Kihika and attended by several local leaders. The event descended into chaos after the arrival of MP Alfred Mutai, with rival supporters reportedly engaging in a confrontation that quickly turned violent.
The victims were identified as Job Kiprono, Mohamed Ali, and Isaac Cheruiyot. According to medical reports and eyewitness accounts, the three sustained gunshot wounds affecting their hands and legs and were rushed to Molo Level 4 Hospital for emergency treatment.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Job Kiprono, who suffered a gunshot wound to his right hand, expressed gratitude to members of the public who came to his aid during the confusion.
“I thank the members of the public who helped me and ensured I received medical attention in time,” he said.
The other two victims, Mohamed Ali and Isaac Cheruiyot, are also recovering at the facility as doctors monitor their condition.
The shooting has sparked condemnation from local leaders and residents, who have called for swift action against those responsible for the violence.
Among those who visited the injured victims at the hospital were local leaders Kipkorir Dude and Kibet Langat. Addressing journalists after the visit, the leaders denounced the incident and urged security agencies to conduct thorough investigations.
They described the violence as unfortunate and unnecessary, warning that continued political hostility could destabilise the region and put innocent lives at risk.
Kibet Langat called on Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja to intervene and order the disarmament of security personnel attached to MP Alfred Mutai, alleging that some of them may have been involved in the shooting.
The leaders also raised concerns over what they termed growing political intolerance in Kuresoi North, accusing politicians of encouraging confrontational politics among young people.
“We are witnessing an alarming trend where youths are being drawn into political conflicts. Leaders should preach peace and coexistence instead of incitement,” one of the leaders said.
Residents and community leaders have appealed for calm as investigations begin, urging politicians to prioritise peaceful engagement and avoid actions that could inflame tensions further.
The incident adds to growing concerns over political violence in parts of the country ahead of heightened political activities, with calls mounting for leaders to exercise restraint and uphold democratic values.
Authorities have not yet released an official statement on the circumstances surrounding the shooting, and investigations are ongoing.
