KILLING

Naivasha, Nakuru County – July 11, 2025
A horrifying murder has rocked the serene Karai area of Naivasha after detectives arrested a 30-year-old nanny, Mary Chebet, accused of murdering her employer and burying the body in a shallow grave behind the family’s home.

The victim, Jane Wambui Njoroge, a staff member at Naivasha Sub-County Hospital, was reported missing by her husband after failing to return home on July 4, 2025. Her unexplained disappearance triggered swift investigations by DCI detectives based in Naivasha Sub-County.

What began as a missing person case quickly turned into a gruesome murder probe.

A Chilling Confession

Following sustained interrogation, Chebet allegedly confessed to killing her employer and led detectives to the burial site — a shallow grave tucked behind the family’s residence in Karai.

Upon exhumation of the body, investigators and public health officers made a disturbing discovery. The body of Jane Wambui, already decomposing, had pieces of clothing tightly wrapped around her neck, indicating she had been strangled.

The grisly scene left neighbors and family in disbelief as news of the cold-blooded act spread throughout the normally quiet community.

Motive Still Under Investigation

The motive for the murder remains unclear, although investigators are treating it as a premeditated killing. Sources close to the investigation indicate that the suspect had been employed by the family for several months without raising any suspicions prior to the tragic incident.

Chebet is currently in police custody and will be arraigned in court once the final stages of the investigation are complete. Authorities are withholding certain details as they continue to piece together the events leading to the murder.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed the arrest and details of the case through their official X (formerly Twitter) account, adding that more updates will be shared in due course.

Community in Shock

The incident has reignited national concern over trust and safety in employer-domestic worker relationships. Many Kenyans took to social media to express outrage and sorrow, with some calling for stricter background checks and mental health screening of household staff.

“This is betrayal of the worst kind. A person entrusted with your home and children ends up being your killer,” said one distraught neighbor.

Local leaders and women rights groups have also called for tighter policies around domestic worker vetting, stressing the need for psychological assessment and enhanced security checks.

As investigations continue, Jane Wambui’s family is left grappling with an unimaginable loss — a trusted employee turned alleged killer, and a young mother taken away in the most cruel and shocking manner.
