More than 200 people arrested during the June 25 Gen Z demonstrations in Nairobi have been charged at the Milimani Law Courts with obstructing motor vehicles and disrupting traffic on major roads within the city.
According to charge sheets presented before the court, the accused are alleged to have unlawfully assembled along Landhies Road at around 9:30 a.m. on June 25, where they obstructed the movement of motor vehicles.
The prosecution told the court that the suspects blocked sections of the road by piling stones and setting tyres ablaze, actions that allegedly caused significant obstruction and inconvenience to motorists and other road users, contrary to the law.
Among those arraigned are 12 suspects arrested by officers from Kamukunji Police Station, 58 from Shauri Moyo Police Station, 46 from Industrial Area Police Station, and 87 from Central Police Station.
All the accused pleaded not guilty to the charges when they appeared before the court.
The court released each of the suspects on a cash bail of KSh 1,000 pending the hearing of their case.
The matter is scheduled to be mentioned on July 2, when the court is expected to give further directions on the proceedings.
The arraignment comes in the wake of nationwide Gen Z demonstrations held on June 25, which saw thousands of Kenyans take to the streets to commemorate the anniversary of the 2025 anti-government protests. While many demonstrations remained peaceful, several areas experienced clashes between protesters and security officers, as well as disruptions to transport and business operations.
Authorities have maintained that those found to have committed offences during the demonstrations will face legal action, while human rights groups continue to call for due process and accountability in the handling of protest-related arrests.
