Former Taita Taveta County Director of Political Affairs Geoffrey Kimonge Mbogo has been charged with fraud-related offences involving more than KSh12 million allegedly misappropriated during his time in office.
According to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), investigations revealed that Mbogo fraudulently acquired public funds and failed to account for KSh12,458,990 while serving in the county government.
The anti-graft agency said it forwarded its investigation file to the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP), which approved his prosecution on charges of fraudulent acquisition of public property and deceiving a principal.
Mbogo was arrested on Tuesday and processed at Voi Police Station before being arraigned before the Anti-Corruption Court in Voi on Wednesday.
Court documents indicate that he pleaded not guilty to all charges.
In the first count, prosecutors allege that between November 20, 2015, and December 16, 2016, Mbogo fraudulently acquired KSh8,303,021 from the Taita Taveta County Government by claiming funds for activities that allegedly never took place.
The prosecution further accuses him of obtaining the money through false representations, knowing that the activities cited in support of the expenditure had not occurred.
In a second count, Mbogo is accused of deceiving the county government by applying for imprest warrants amounting to KSh8,303,021 for purported activities that were never conducted.
The prosecution argues that the former county official knowingly misled the county administration into releasing the funds, causing financial loss to the public.
Following his arraignment, the court released Mbogo on a cash bail of KSh1 million or an alternative bond of KSh2 million with one surety of a similar amount.
The court also ordered him to surrender his passport and barred him from leaving the country without prior court approval.
The case will be mentioned on July 1, 2026, for pre-trial directions as the prosecution prepares to proceed with the matter.
