A section of MPs from Western Kenya has thrown their support behind former Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya to be President William Ruto’s running mate in the 2027 general election. The lawmakers argue that Oparanya, a seasoned politician and former Council of Governors chair, has the leadership experience and regional backing necessary to strengthen Ruto’s re-election bid.
Speaking at a political gathering, the MPs emphasized the importance of Western Kenya having a bigger stake in national leadership, noting that Oparanya’s influence and track record make him a strong candidate for the position. They urged President Ruto to consider balancing regional representation in his ticket by picking a leader from Western Kenya.
Led by key political figures from the region, the legislators highlighted Oparanya’s ability to unite leaders across political divides, a quality they believe would complement Ruto’s leadership. “Oparanya has a wealth of experience in governance and has demonstrated his capability in delivering development. His partnership with Ruto would be a winning formula,” said one of the MPs.
While Oparanya has yet to publicly declare interest in the position, his name has been floated as a potential game-changer in Western Kenya’s political dynamics. The former governor, who previously served as ODM Deputy Party Leader, has been seen engaging in meetings with leaders from various political camps, fueling speculation about his next move.
However, the endorsement has sparked mixed reactions, with some leaders in the region insisting that Western Kenya should chart its own political path rather than align with the ruling party. Others argue that the community should negotiate for a more significant role in government before pledging support.
