A section of Members of Parliament is calling for urgent government intervention to curb the increasing cases of reckless driving by miraa (khat) transporters across the country. The lawmakers have raised alarm over the rising number of road accidents linked to high-speed miraa vehicles, particularly along major highways.
Speaking during a session in Parliament, the MPs noted that miraa drivers, often rushing to deliver fresh produce, disregard traffic laws and endanger the lives of other road users. They urged the Ministry of Transport and the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) to implement stricter regulations and enforcement measures.
“There is a growing concern across the country. These miraa vehicles are flying on the roads like they own them,” one MP stated. “We are witnessing unnecessary deaths and injuries simply because some drivers are prioritizing profit over safety.”
The lawmakers proposed several measures, including:
- Speed limits specifically targeting miraa transporters
- Mandatory tracking devices in miraa vehicles
- Increased traffic police patrols along known miraa routes
- Revocation of licenses for repeat offenders
The call for action comes after a series of recent accidents involving miraa-laden vehicles, some resulting in fatalities. Residents in affected regions, especially in Meru, Isiolo, Embu, and parts of Nairobi, have echoed the MPs’ sentiments, demanding an end to what they term as “miraa madness.”
The government is yet to issue a formal response, but the pressure is mounting for swift and decisive action.
