Inter Milan has booked their place in the 2025 UEFA Champions League final after a dramatic and intense semi-final clash with Spanish giants Barcelona at the San Siro. The Italian side triumphed 4-3 after extra time in the second leg, securing a thrilling 7-6 aggregate win that will go down in tournament history as one of the most memorable encounters.
The match began with a bang as Inter Milan quickly asserted dominance. Lautaro Martínez fired the hosts ahead early, energizing the passionate San Siro crowd. The Argentine striker, a consistent performer this season, found space in the box and calmly slotted past the Barcelona goalkeeper, Marc-André ter Stegen. Hakan Çalhanoğlu doubled Inter’s lead before the half-time whistle, sending fans into a frenzy as it seemed the Italian side was marching comfortably into the final.
However, Barcelona, known for their resilience and tactical flexibility, mounted a fierce comeback after the break. Eric García got the Catalans back into the match with a crucial goal that reignited their hopes. As the match slipped into stoppage time, veteran defender Francesco Acerbi rose above the crowd to head home a vital equalizer. His goal in the dying moments sent the tie to extra time, with the aggregate level at 6-6. The atmosphere was electric as both sides dug deep for a winner.
The decisive moment came in the 99th minute, courtesy of substitute Davide Frattesi. The young Italian midfielder latched onto a loose ball and calmly placed it past Ter Stegen, sending the San Siro into raptures. It was Frattesi’s first goal in the Champions League this season and perhaps the most important of his career so far.
Inter’s manager Simone Inzaghi was full of praise for his squad after the match. “It took a super Inter,” he said. “We were facing one of the best teams in the world, but my players gave everything. They showed heart, grit, and the belief that has carried us throughout this competition.”
He also acknowledged the challenge Barcelona posed. “They have so much quality. I wouldn’t swap my players, but I have great respect for them — especially young Lamine Yamal and Frenkie de Jong. They made life difficult for us.”
On the opposite bench, Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick was visibly frustrated with some of the officiating. He questioned two critical decisions involving VAR: a penalty awarded to Inter that Çalhanoğlu converted, and a potential penalty for Barcelona that was reversed after review. “We gave it our all and played great football, especially in the second half. But some decisions didn’t go our way,” Flick said.
Despite the heartbreak, he was quick to praise his players. “This team showed character. We fought back from two goals down and were minutes away from the final. Now, we focus on the league.”
Inter Milan will now head to the Champions League final in Munich later this month, where they will face the winner of the other semi-final between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal. For the Nerazzurri, this marks their first final appearance since 2010 — a year they famously won the treble under José Mourinho.
